After serving as conductor at the Berlin Théâtre Français and as Kapellmeister to Prince Heinrich of Reisberg, he became Kapellmeister to the Royal Court in Copenhagen in 1788. There, he is said to have gained popularity by composing operas and Singspiele that incorporated folk songs and melodies popular at the time.
