From 1698, he served as organist at St. John’s Church in Hanover-Lüneburg for 35 years, and Although he is primarily known as a composer for keyboard instruments, it appears he also served as a composer of church music under a contract with the court; most of the surviving scores either lack the composer’s name or bear only what appear to be forged signatures or abbreviated initials. This collection includes works that have been definitively identified as Böhme’s through recent research. These works follow the traditional North German cantata style and are exceptionally beautiful compositions that combine Pachelbel’s motets with Buxtehude’s concerto form; they are believed to have exerted a significant influence on Bach’s early cantatas.
