Work on the first movement began in late September 1881, immediately after the completion of Symphony No. 6. While he was writing the climax of the second movement, Richard Wagner—whom he respected most—died on February 13, 1883. Amid his grief, he completed the coda of that movement, interpreting the section from measure 184 onward as a “funeral march” for Wagner. The entire work was completed in September 1883.
