Although Bach's time at the Keten Court was short, lasting only about six years, the existence of an excellent orchestra, the Collegium Musicum, and the many opportunities for performance led to a great deal of creative activity and the production of a great many masterpieces. This album attempts to get a closer look at Keten's court music by including works by Joseph Spies, Georg Linike, and Augustin Reinhard Stricker, all of whom had close ties to Keten at the time. BackgroundFriedrich Wilhelm I [1688-1740], who ascended to the Prussian throne in 1713, embarked on a sudden reform in the name of rebuilding the nation's finances, which had been shaken by the profligate spending habits of his father, King Frederick I [1657-1713], and boldly cut the cultural budget.
