This is Haydn’s “The Seasons,” performed in 1994 at the monastery in Diessen am Ammersee, a lakeside town in the southernmost part of Bavaria. At age 70, Savallish was at the peak of his artistry, and with the outstanding Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus as his partners, the performance is exceptionally rich and fulfilling. Furthermore, as the performance took place in a Baroque-style monastery built in the 18th century in the beautiful lakeside town of Dissen am Ammersee, the sound conveys an atmosphere distinct from that of a concert hall. The vocal lineup is also outstanding, featuring Gesak, who was rapidly gaining international fame at the time; Gambill, just before his transition to the heldentenor role; and the substantial singing of the then 45-year-old Muf. Although Savall and Haydn seem like a natural fit, there are few recordings of them together—and recordings from the period after Savall became a master are virtually nonexistent.
