Engelbert Humperdinck, best known for *Hansel and Gretel*, composed several other operas as well, and among them, *The King’s Children* is relatively well-known. Although it also features a fairy-tale-like theme, this one is a tragedy. A goose-herder’s daughter, forced to work by a witch in the forest, meets the king’s son (who has no claim to the throne) and they fall in love. Though the goose-herder’s daughter is unable to leave the forest due to the witch’s magic, she learns that she, too, is of royal blood. Determined to be with the king’s son, she breaks the spell on her own and heads for the town. However, after setting out for the town separately, the two are ultimately driven out by the townspeople and die in the forest after eating the “bread of death” baked by the witch. The influence of Wagner is evident in the music as well, making this a work far richer in romantic color than *Hansel and Gretel*.\nThis recording was made by Bavarian Radio in 1996. With Thomas Moser as the King’s Son, Dagmar Schellenberger as the Goose Girl, and Dietrich Henschel as the Fiddler, the cast is so stellar that one would hardly believe this is a lesser-known opera. Moreover, it is conducted by Fabio Luisi! At the time, Luigi had recently been appointed principal conductor of the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra—a position that laid the foundation for his fame—and his reputation was skyrocketing.
