And top-notch, to boot!\nBy Suitner \u0026amp; Dresden:\nMusic from Strauss’s stage works\n\nOtmar Suitner (1922–2010), a renowned conductor well-known to Japanese fans through his frequent guest appearances as Honorary Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, served as Music Director of the Semperoper from 1960 to 1964. While Suitner was renowned for his interpretations of the German-Austrian repertoire—including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms—his performances of Richard Strauss, which drew from that same tradition, were also outstanding. In fact, the complete recording of *Salome*, made in 1963 during Switner’s tenure as music director at the Semperoper, is widely regarded as one of the definitive recordings of this work. The excellence of this *Salome* recording offers a glimpse into the brilliance of Strauss’s music as performed by Suitner and the Dresden ensemble; for some reason, aside from this truly one-of-a-kind *Salome*, no other Strauss recordings by this collaboration—whether studio recordings or live recordings—were known to exist. The series of music from operas conducted by Suitner, now appearing in the Edition Staatskapelle Dresden, was recorded in the studio for broadcast in 1963—the very same year that the legendary performance of *Salome* was preserved. Listening to these recordings, it becomes clear not only that Suitner’s musical phrasing is superb, but above all that the orchestra’s richly expressive sound is inextricably linked to the music of Strauss. In any case, it is certainly welcome news that we can now enjoy Strauss’s works anew through Suitner’s conducting and a performance by the Dresden orchestra, which has such close ties to the composer. Disc 2 also features an interview with Switner.
