The up-and-coming 33-year-old took on Bruckner. Nézet-Séguin recorded the same piece with the Metropolitan Orchestra of Montreal in June 2014. The difference in the Staatskapelle Dresden's austere, full-bodied tone compared to the Metropolitan Orchestra's bright, Latin-like colors is astonishing, but the tempo is also slower by more than five minutes overall. The second movement Adagio, in particular, is almost three minutes slower, allowing the audience to fully enjoy the profoundness of Bruckner's music. It is an exciting battle between a traditional German orchestra with Bruckner's tradition in its blood and a young orchestra that is breaking with tradition to recreate Bruckner as pure music.
