Baroque music full of youthful energy! Carlos Kleiber's memorable first recording has survived. He was 29 years old at the time, and had made his full-fledged operatic debut the previous year at the Salzburg State Theater with \"The Sold Bride\" and \"La Bohème\", and was just starting out in the world of music. The concert featured an orchestral suite from Telemann's \"Tafelmusik\" (Music at the Table) Vol. 3 and a cello concerto by C.P.E. Bach, an unusual repertoire that Kleiber never worked with later in his career. The concert took place on December 7, 1960, but there was also a session recording for broadcast at the NDR studios on December 1 and 2 of the same month. Perhaps because of the good condition of the session recordings, the only live recording of the concert was the C.P.E. Bach: Cello Concerto, and a personal recording of the broadcast has now seen the light of day for the first time. The soloist is the Swiss virtuoso Irene Güdel. He had been teaching at the Detmold University of Music since 1957, but was completely unknown internationally. It is said that he really wanted to choose another cello concerto, but since there was nothing that matched Telemann, he had no choice but to decide. However, C.P.E. Bach's \"gale-force\" style suited the young Kleiber perfectly. Although there are some sound distortions caused by the sound source, it is an unexpected pleasure to hear this performance, which has been recognized only on the recordings. The recording of Kleiber's concerto with Richter is rare, and the only one of Dvořák that we have is very rare, so it is very valuable. The Tafelmusik has a relaxed, purified, and transparent sound, and a lively tempo that is both propulsive and flowing. It is surprising to get the impression that it has already anticipated ancient musical interpretations. A review in \"Die Welt\" praised \"swinging, breathing tempos, a refined sense of sound, and a perceptive musicality that reveals a clear conception. What is even more remarkable is that the recording includes a rare 6-minute segment of him talking about himself and his father between concerts, despite his famous aversion to interviews. It is a super treasure that cannot be found anywhere else. Just listening to the young Kleiber's voice is a thrill. The sound is clear even in mono. A must-have for all Kleiber fans, and the most talked-about disc of this fall.
