This is one of the most famous works among his 555 sonatas and is a notoriously difficult piece featuring intense repeated notes.\nNext, in 2010, comes Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Its official title is “Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra.” It is quintessentially Shostakovich—full of humor and irony—and the interplay with the trumpet is magnificent. Argerich’s crisp, lively touch remains as sharp as ever. The trumpet soloist is David Guillier, a highly talented musician who won the Maurice André International Trumpet Competition at age 14 and, at age 18, became the first person since Maurice André to take first prize at the Munich International Competition. He is a virtuoso who currently serves as principal horn of the Orchestre National de France.\nThe program concludes with what is effectively Bizet’s only symphony, in C major.
