As you may know, the Salzburg Festival is held at the same time as the Bayreuth Festival, so it does not usually stage Wagner operas. This was a special production, and as such, it was staged with great care and dedication.\nAbove all, the staging by the currently hugely popular Norwegian director Stefan Heirheim was extremely well-received. Recognizing that *Die Meistersinger* is a story set around the summer solstice, Herheim staged it—much like *A Midsummer Night’s Dream*—as a dream sequence of Sachs-Wagner, successfully creating a *Die Meistersinger* that was highly fantastical and offered a perspective quite different from conventional interpretations. While he vividly brought to light a sharp perspective made possible precisely by this world of mysterious unreality, he also incorporated comical scenes that elicited laughter throughout the performance, skillfully bringing out the multifaceted charm of *Die Meistersinger*.\nAs befits an anniversary production, the cast is stellar. Michael Folle, who sang Beckmesser at Bayreuth in 2007 and 2008, took on the role of Sachs in Salzburg, where he was highly acclaimed for his rich voice and superb acting. The role of Beckmesser is played by Markus Wellba, who has gained many fans in Japan through the Mozart opera series at Suntory Hall. He portrays a dashing Beckmesser with a beautiful voice. The role of Walter is sung by Roberto Sacca, who has earned high praise in recent years for his performances in Wagnerian tenor roles. Although he is of Italian descent, he was born and raised in Germany. Efa is played by Anna Gabler, who also sang the role at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival in April 2013. In June 2014, she sang the title role in Richard Strauss’s *Arabella* at the New National Theatre. Georg Zeppenfeld, who plays Pogner, is a German bass currently making a name for himself at the Semperoper in Dresden. The rest of the cast is exceptionally strong.\nThe conductor is Daniele Gatti, who led the orchestra for “Parsifal,” directed by Haarheim at the Bayreuth Festival from 2008 to 2011. As expected, the performance clearly reflects a deep understanding of the director’s intentions.\nKing International\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"EuroArts","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53374646518049,"sku":"880242726896","price":4941.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/880242726896.jpg?v=1787632179","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/880242726896","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
