Because the Salzburg Festival runs at the same time as the Bayreuth Festival, it does not normally present Wagner's operas; this was therefore a special event, and one into which enormous effort was poured.\nAbove all, the production by the hugely fashionable Norwegian director Stefan Herheim (as a Norwegian, his first name is Stefan rather than the German Stephan) was received with great enthusiasm.\nTaking as his starting point the fact that Die Meistersinger is a midsummer story, Herheim frames it, rather in the manner of A Midsummer Night's Dream, as a dream of Sachs-as-Wagner, creating a fantastical staging that views the work from a strikingly unfamiliar angle. Precisely because the world is an unreal one, he is able to throw sharp insights into vivid relief, and by weaving in genuinely funny moments he draws out the work's many facets with great skill.\nAs befits an anniversary production, the cast is a strong one. Michael Volle, who sang Beckmesser at Bayreuth in 2007 and 2008, here takes the role of Sachs, and was widely acclaimed for his rich singing and acting. Beckmesser is Markus Werba, who has many admirers in Japan from the Mozart opera series at Suntory Hall — a handsome, beautifully sung Beckmesser. Walther is Roberto Saccà, highly regarded in recent years in Wagner's tenor roles; of Italian descent, he was nevertheless born and raised in Germany. Eva is Anna Gabler, who sang the same role at the Spring Festival in Tokyo in April 2013 and took the title role in Richard Strauss's Arabella at the New National Theatre, Tokyo in June 2014. Pogner is Georg Zeppenfeld, the German bass who has been so prominent at the Semperoper in Dresden. The remaining roles are cast with equal strength.\nThe conductor is Daniele Gatti, who conducted Herheim's Parsifal production at Bayreuth from 2008 to 2011 and who understands the director's intentions thoroughly.\nJapanese subtitles are included.\nKing International\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"EuroArts","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53414281871649,"sku":"880242726889","price":5990.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/880242726889.jpg?v=1788096512","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/880242726889","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
