This was all done to honor Domingo, whose parents were zarzuela singers and who himself has a deep passion for the genre. The program features a wide range of famous and lesser-known zarzuela arias and duets. His soprano partner, Martinez, is from Puerto Rico. After graduating from the Juilliard School, she won the zarzuela prize at “Operalia,” a competition organized by Domingo, in 1995. She also made her debut at the Met in 2005 and delivers a performance full of energy. Even the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, which usually gives a reserved impression, was spurred on by López-Cobos’s conducting and delivered a lively performance. The concert concluded with a duet from Lehár’s *The Merry Widow*, sending the entire audience into a frenzy of applause.
