Before his term ends in June 2018, the EUROARTS label will release a 7-disc DVD box set featuring performances that epitomize the partnership, selected from previously released video recordings. DVD 1 features footage of the 1993 performances of “Symphonie fantastique” and “Les Boréades,” which marked the first step in Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic’s journey together. As Rattle himself has said of Rameau’s masterpiece *Les Boréades*, performed here: “As a teenager, I was deeply moved by a performance by Elliott Gardiner and was immediately captivated. From that moment on, this piece became a part of my musical life,” as Rattle himself has said, and he still enjoys including it in his concerts to this day. DVD 2 features a Waldbühne concert held two years after their first collaboration in 1993. Titled “American Night,” the concert presents a dazzling array of music by Bernstein, Gershwin, and other leading American composers of the 20th century. DVD 3 features the 2006 New Year’s Eve Concert, with Mitsuko Uchida appearing as soloist. Furthermore, DVD 4 documents the 2008 European Concert held in Moscow, where Vadim Repin performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto. Next, from the Berlin Philharmonic’s Easter Festival—which has been held in the German spa town of Baden-Baden since 2013, after moving from Salzburg—features the beautiful and popular Argentine cellist, Sol Gabetta made her Berlin Philharmonic debut in 2014, and “Tosca” from the 2017 Baden-Baden Easter Festival, which marked the first time the Berlin Philharmonic had performed the piece in 28 years since its 1989 performance conducted by Karajan. It also includes footage from the 2017 New Year’s Eve Concert, which marked Rattle’s final appearance as music director.
