Ružičková was born in 1927 into a Jewish family in what was then Czechoslovakia and began studying piano as a child. In 1939, Nazi Germany occupied all of Czechoslovakia, and she was sent to a concentration camp with her family. After enduring harsh conditions in several concentration camps, she began to focus seriously on the harpsichord after the war. In 1952, she married the Czech composer Viktor Karabis. Although her musical activities were restricted in her home country due to her opposition to the communist regime, she gained international recognition after winning first prize at the Munich International Competition in 1956. It is said that at the time, Ruzickova pleaded with her husband, saying she did not want to go to the competition in Germany because it would bring back painful memories of her time in the camps, but Karavis persuaded her by saying, “You are a Jew who has brought Bach back to Germany, and you have a major role to play in reviving the refined culture that the Nazis destroyed.” In the 1960s, she began recording the complete works for keyboard by Bach for Erato, earning worldwide acclaim. This LP features four tracks sourced from the remastered box set released in 2016 to commemorate her 90th birthday. This documentary was directed by Peter Gotzels, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. When Ruzicková was approached by him about this project, she reportedly resonated with his sense of urgency regarding the state of today’s society and felt it was necessary to preserve her own history for posterity. However, director Getzels says the film is not merely a focus on dark historical aspects, but also a story of her love for Bach and for music.
