The March 2012 production directed by Adam Fischer at the Monete Theater is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.\n\nIn Dvořák’s *Rusalka*, Rusalka—a water nymph living in a lake deep in the forest—falls in love with a human prince and uses magic to transform herself into a human. The conditions of the spell are that she must remain silent and, should the prince change his heart, drag him to the bottom of the lake. Although she grows close to the prince as she had hoped, the prince, frustrated by her silence, falls in love with another woman, and the story ends in tragedy, just as the spell dictated.\n\nIn Hairheim’s production, the setting is relocated to the streets of modern-day Brussels: Rusalka is a prostitute, the water spirit is an elderly client, the prince is portrayed in his youth, and the sorcerer is the old man’s wife. The old man, lured by Rusalka, sees the likeness of his first love and tries to buy her, but his elderly wife catches him and refuses to let him into the house. The story then descends into a world that blurs the line between dream and delusion, unfolding as a crime drama in which he commits a series of murders.\n\nThe role of the Rusalkas is played by Miltos Papathanasiou from Greece. He has been in high demand at opera houses around the world in recent years and delivers a captivating performance as the Rusalkas here as well. In particular, the romantic aria “Song to the Moon”—a highlight of the performance—captures the hearts of astronomy enthusiasts and won’t let go, especially with the moment where she directs her song not at the moon but at a parabolic antenna. Fischer’s musical interpretation is both elegant and masterfully structured.
