Barenboim takes the podium at the Berlin Philharmonic, home of the Berlin Philharmonic, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2014 with a program of Shakespeare-related works on the 450th anniversary of the Berlin Philharmonic's founding on May 1, 1882. The 2014 concert was held at the Berlin Philharmonie, the home of the Berliner Philharmoniker, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 in its hometown of Berlin. The program features works related to the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. It was conducted by Barenboim. The concert opens with the overture to Otto Nicolai's opera "The Merry Wives of Windsor," based on Shakespeare's play "The Merry Wives of Windsor." Then comes Falstaff, a symphonic study by Elgar, one of Britain's most famous composers.This orchestral depiction of Falstaff from Shakespeare's play "Henry IV" features orchestration reminiscent of R. Strauss' symphonic poems and the gentle melancholy of Elgar's lyrical singing. The Berlin Philharmonic's skillful expression and Barenboim's precise interpretation make it a delight to listen to. The last piece is the Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky, a composer who loved Shakespeare. This work has not been performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in recent years, but Barenboim recorded it with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1995 and the West Eastern Divan Orchestra in 2004. The work is woven with expressions of human emotion, and the tempo increases toward the end movement, which is acoustically exciting.
