This video features the new production of “Coppélia,” premiered in 2006 and choreographed by Eduardo Rao, the artistic director of the Víctor Uliate Ballet Company. “Coppélia” is one of the masterpieces of ballet, composed by Delibes based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Sandman.” It tells the story of Coppelia, a mechanical doll created by Dr. Coppelius, an elderly dollmaker. Eduardo Rao, a prodigious talent from Andalusia, Spain, has masterfully reimagined this classic masterpiece, “Coppelia,” as a contemporary production interwoven with elements of neo-classical ballet. The story follows Dr. Coppelius, a researcher of artificial intelligence, as he works to create “Coppélia,” a female android capable of behaving like a human. Franz, a young man working in Dr. Coppelius’s laboratory, falls in love with this android. However, since Coppélia lacked human emotions, the goddess of holy spirits, known as the Spectral Diva, uses the “Mechanical God” to implant a human heart within her, causing her to desire a life with Franz. However, now that she possesses emotions, Coppelia’s heart is torn between Dr. Coppelius—who sees her as a source of financial gain—and Franz... ...The story unfolds in this way.
