Despite still being in his twenties, he has already enjoyed a highly successful career. Vitaly Kovalyov, who plays Alfonso, was born in Cherkasy, Ukraine. He is currently in high demand in Europe and the United States as a bass, and made headlines for his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner’s *Die Walküre*, the opening performance of La Scala’s 2010–2011 season. The conductor is Riccardo Frizza, who delivers crisp, incisive music while perfectly capturing the essence of Donizetti and Verdi. This was reportedly his first appearance at the San Francisco Opera. The staging by veteran opera director John Pasco was originally created for the Washington National Opera. Centered on a lavish, Hollywood-style aesthetic (with young Fabiano’s costume featuring a deeply plunging neckline), the production skillfully balances modern elements to create a stage that offers glimpses of a sharp perspective amidst its beauty.
