In 2010, as the series reaches its climax with the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth, the Symphony No. 4—recorded in 2009—follows two consecutive releases starting with the “Titan.” Abbado previously recorded Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in a studio session with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1977, and in 2005 with the Berlin Philharmonic; he also released a video recording of a live performance with the Mahler Youth Orchestra at the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna in April 2006. Thus, this marks Abado’s fourth recording of the work—his first in four years.\nIn his previous recording with the Mahler Jugendorchester, I was amazed by the passionate music played by young musicians who deeply admired Abbado, and even more so by the master’s vigorous creative drive, inspired by them. Here, however, we have the “unprecedented super orchestra”— —the Lucerne Festival Orchestra—featuring soloist-caliber musicians in every section. We can expect the orchestra’s functional beauty to be perfected to near-perfection in every detail, along with the passionate interpretation characteristic of Abad’s recent work.\nAs was clearly evident in the previous performance of “The Giant,” alongside the orchestra’s rich and full sound, the high level of artistry—particularly the presence of Kojena, one of today’s foremost mezzo-sopranos, who takes the solo in the finale—is also a major point of interest.\nAdditionally, the first half of the program features the Ruckert Lieder, composed around the same time as the Symphony No. 4. The program is structured so that after “I Am Forgotten in This World”—which shares motivic connections with the Adagio of the Symphony No. 4—is sung, it flows directly into the symphony. Since this is a repertoire in which Kojena has long demonstrated her prowess through live performances, it is expected that, together with the Symphony No. 4—her first recording of the work—she will deliver a performance characterized by depth and richness.\nThe Mahler series by Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra is finally within reach of completion.
