Rare recordings from the 1960s by Harold Land, one of the West Coast’s leading tenor saxophonists!
Live recording at the "Penthouse" in Seattle
Featuring an all-star lineup including Carmel Jones (tp), Hampton Hawes (p), and Philly Joe Jones (ds)!

Harold Land, who made a name for himself in the mid-1950s as a member of the Clifford Brown–Max Roach Quintet, left the group early on because he was reluctant to leave his home base of Los Angeles, and subsequently continued his career primarily in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Consequently, he recorded most of his leader albums on the West Coast.

Released by the ReelToReal label—which has previously released rare, previously unreleased performances by Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Griffin, Eddie “Rockjoe” Davis, and Etta Jones—this unearthed recording was also made at “The Penthouse,” a club in Seattle, Washington, on the West Coast.

Land was in top form during this period, and his playing—which exudes a strong sense of individuality within a stable framework—is simply spectacular. This collection features performances from 1962, 1964, and 1965 at the same club; each features a fascinating lineup, and Land’s playing is at its absolute peak. The three tracks from 1962, featuring Carmel Jones (tp), Buddy Montgomery (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and Jimmy Loveless (ds), present a vivid contrast between Jones’s brilliant trumpet and Land’s composed tenor saxophone. The two tracks recorded in 1964 feature Hampton Hoes (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and Mel Lee (ds). Hoes’s lively, bouncy piano playing is simply superb. The 1965 session, featuring four tracks, is an exciting performance with John Houston (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and—believe it or not—Philly Joe Jones (ds). Above all, Philly Joe’s driving drums are what really grab your attention.

Around this time, Land was busy with his work as a sideman, and his only leader album was the Imperial release *Jazz Impressions of Folk Music*, recorded in 1963 with a quintet featuring Carmel Jones, John Houston, Jimmy Bond, and Mel Lee. The significance of the discovery of this performance at "The Penthouse" is truly immeasurable.

Produced via direct remastering from the original tapes held by the club, this is a 2-LP set. Mastered by Kevin Gray, it is a limited edition of 1,500 sets worldwide on 180g heavyweight vinyl.
The liner notes are also extensive! Not only are they filled with rare photos, but they also include essays by Michael Cuscuna and co-producers Zev Feldman and Corey Weese, as well as interviews with Joe Lovano and Sonny Rollins (!!).

Tracklisting:

1.Vendetta
2.Beep Durple
1.Happily Dancing / Deep Harmonies Falling
2.My Romance
1.Triplin' The Groove
2.Autumn Leaves
1.Who Can I Turn To
2.Beau-ty
3.Blue N' Boogie
