Etta Jones

Description:

Born in South Carolina in 1928, Etta Jones has sung in many big bands since the '40s, but it was her recording of "Don't Go To Strangers" for Prestige in 1960 (featuring Frank Wess, Richard Wyans, and others), a short time after she became an independent singer, that brought her into the limelight. (Frank Wess, Richard Wyans, and others joined the band). After that, he recorded some excellent albums with Oliver Nelson, Larry Young, Kenny Burrell, and others for Prestige until 1963, but he left "Etta Jones Sings" for Roulette in 1965 and went away from recording for a while. After leaving "Etta Jones Sings" for Roulette in 1965, she went away from recording for a while. The following year, in 1973, she recorded with Houston Person and Gene Ammons, which led to a full-fledged comeback, and from 1976, she recorded a series of masterpieces for Muse. The newly unearthed recording was made live at a club in Baltimore on February 27, 1972. It was a session with the Cedar Walton Trio mentioned above, and we can hear her singing for the first time since the Roulette disc. The remaining 8 songs are the first time to hear them performed. The remaining eight songs are new to me, but the first song, "Theme from "Love Story,"" is performed only by the Cedar Walton Trio, and Etta does not participate in the performance. Cedar's trio with Sam Jones and Billy Higgins has made many other great recordings, but here, too, they thrill the audience with their swingy playing, which is unique to this trio. Etta, backed by the unquestionably great trio, also swings lightly and sings ballads with ease.
