Description:

The second in a series of Mozart symphony recordings by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music (Akamus) on the PENTATONE label. The first recording (PTC-5187059), which was nominated for the German Record Critics Award, included "Haffner," "Paris," and the oboe concerto. Symphony No. 29, which was completed in 1773 and the following year, is a very popular symphony among the symphonies written by Mozart in his teens. The Symphony No. 33, completed in Salzburg in 1779 and later performed in Vienna with the addition of a minuet and a four-movement form, is a favorite of the great masters of the past, including Carlos Kleiber and Mravinsky.Akamus, who has become more refined and sharp in recent years, presents two symphonies from this period of Mozart's life when he sublimated the influence of Italian music and began to show a clear personality, in a performance that is almost too vivid. In No. 29, the dotted rhythms are highlighted and the intensity of the music, which sometimes reminds us of "gale force," is revealed. The exciting achland in the final section of the first movement is especially a treat to hear. In No. 33, the orchestra overwhelms the audience with a performance of great scale that draws out from within the piece a potential that rivals the masterpieces No. 38-41. The string formation is 5-5-3-2-1, one size smaller than in the first recording, and the overall interpretation is quite dynamic and contrasting, but the fact that there is no disturbance in the balance or unity of the instruments as a whole is a testament to Akamus's amazing ensemble ability.
