Billy Stewart, a 58-year-old veteran drummer who has spent his early years at the Village Vanguard, listening to the performances of master drummers and using them as a source of inspiration for his own music, has now taken on the challenge of creating an ambitious trio album without piano or guitar, using only bass and drums with tenor saxophone up front. I wanted to work with the open sound of a tenor trio. With no piano or guitar, we can fill more space with the drums and give more space to the music. I also had in mind the famous tenor, bass, and drums recordings that Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson made at Vanguard.
