However, he was not born in Italy proper, but in Pazin, Croatia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), and during World War I under the Fascist regime, he was interned in Graz, Austria, where he reportedly had no opportunity to play the piano. Nevertheless, his passion for music never waned; he studied piano at the Florence Conservatory and went on to achieve success as a musician. However, his childhood experiences fostered a keen interest in politics, which is strongly reflected in his works.\nThe Partita, composed around 1930, is one of his masterpieces and is significant as the work that established his distinctive style.
