Jacobs, a musician of vast experience, acute ears and deep learning, has clearly waited for the right moment to set these works down.\n\nThe B'Rock Orchestra was founded in 2005 in Ghent, Belgium's third city, and plays on period instruments. It has built its reputation through collaborations with René Jacobs, Ivor Bolton and Alexander Melnikov, among others. Several Japanese players are among its members, and its long-awaited Japanese debut in September 2019 attracted considerable attention. Under Jacobs's baton the orchestra's endlessly shifting colours sing with complete freedom, in performances that are vivid and full of character.\n\nCompleted a year and five months after the First Symphony, the Second is more assured than its predecessor in formal terms, and far more recognisably Schubertian. The Third dates from the same year, 1815, during which Schubert also produced five operas, two piano sonatas and two masses. The Third Symphony shows unmistakably the hand of a born song composer. Jacobs — a singer as well as a conductor, and above all a musician — captures the buoyant world of the teenage Schubert to perfection.\n\nRecorded by PENTATONE's distinguished engineering team, including Erdo Groot, using DSD recording technology, the disc offers superb multi-channel sound of the highest quality.\n\n\"Schubert was the first of my favourite composers whose music I was given the chance to sing in concert as a child. In time I became a member of the boys' choir at the cathedral in my home city of Ghent, singing as a boy soprano soloist.
