The latest recording by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marc Albrecht, features Schoenberg’s arrangement of Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 1 and Schoenberg’s incidental music for a film scene. Schönberg arranged the Piano Quartet for orchestra in 1937, after he had emigrated to the United States, and it was premiered on May 7, 1938, by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Klemperer. Schönberg’s arrangement, which captures the very essence of this work, leaves one unable to help but feel his deep respect for Brahms. Meanwhile, the incidental music for a scene in the film was composed between 1929 and 1930, and its premiere was also conducted by Klemperer. Although the piece makes full use of the twelve-tone technique, its premiere is said to have been a great success. Albrecht masterfully controls the orchestra with his clear baton.\nMark Albrecht and the Netherlands Philharmonic have released Mahler’s *Das Lied von der Erde* (PTC5186502) and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 (PTC5186487) on the PENTATONE label, both of which have received high acclaim.\n\n\u003cmark albrecht\u003e\nMark Albrecht, highly acclaimed for his interpretations of Wagner and R. Strauss as well as his passion for contemporary music, currently serves, as of 2015, serves as chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, and regularly appears as a guest conductor at prestigious opera houses and orchestras across Europe. Early in his career, he spent several seasons at the opera houses in Hamburg and Dresden and was appointed assistant to Claudio Abbado at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna. In 1995, he became Music Director of the Darmstadt State Theater, a position he held for six years, and from 2006 to 2011, he served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra.
