This 2-CD set features Rachmaninoff’s works for two pianos, selected from the many pieces presented in the “Argenteau Project.” The 2009 recording of “Symphonic Dances” in Rachmaninoff’s own arrangement is a performance previously unreleased on any album, featuring a passionate ensemble performance with Argentine-born pianist Nelson Gernner as her partner. For the other pieces as well, Argenteau is paired with notable pianists; for example, Gabriel Montero—best known for his highly idiosyncratic arrangements of Bach—delivers a rich, almost suffocatingly romantic interpretation of Rachmaninoff here. While Argerich is best known for her definitive performance of this work with Nelson Freire, this performance with Montero is fascinating in that it offers a distinctly different approach.
