In this work, he engages with liturgical texts steeped in history through a new, personal, and spiritual musical language.\n\nThe central piece, *Stabat Mater*, is based on a 13th-century hymn depicting the sorrow of the Virgin Mary. Nickel composed this work in 2021, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has stated that he reexamined his own life and priorities through the suffering people were experiencing at the time. Unlike the famous works by Pergolesi, Rossini, Dvořák, and Poulenc, this piece does not use a choir.
