With one representing modern Polish music and the other pure German Romanticism, these two composers have nothing in common other than having each left behind four symphonies—but since this was Gergiev’s first foray into Szymanowski’s repertoire, it was a source of great curiosity. This album features only works by Szymanowski, including three pieces for soloist and orchestra.\n\n★Karol Szymanowski (1882–1937) is a leading figure in modern Polish music, though he was born and raised in Ukraine. He came from a family with a special place in Russian musical history: his cousin was Heinrich Neuhaus, a pioneer of Russian pianism, and his uncle was Felix Blumenfeld, a pianist and composer who was Horowitz’s teacher.
