New production by the genius Neuenfels! Hans Neuenfels' new production of Tchaikovsky's \"Queen of Spades\" was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jansons. Hans Jansons conducted the same production at the Dutch National Opera in 2016 to great acclaim, so this performance is not to be missed. The production is directed by Hans Neuenfels, one of Germany's leading contemporary talents. He is known for his radical productions such as the controversial \"Lohengrin (2012)\" at the Bayreuth Festival, and this production has also been the focus of much attention. Based on the novel \"The Queen of Spades\" by Pushkin, a Russian nationalist writer, \"The Queen of Spades\" is set in the aristocratic society of the 18th century and depicts Gelman, an officer of the Kingsguard, who destroys himself through gambling. Tchaikovsky's brother Modesto wrote the libretto to it, and Tchaikovsky made it into a more dramatic opera. This production by Neuenfels, despite its avant-garde setting, is surprisingly close to the music, and the singers and performances are outstanding.Jovanovich's singing as Germain is overwhelming, and he delivers a tragically passionate and stunning performance. The male singers of Eretzky's Golovatenko, Tomsky's Slymsky, and Chekalinsky's Kravets also give outstanding performances. The veteran Hannah Schwarz's Countess also has a strong presence. Jansons, too, is currently in a state of health concern, but on this occasion, she successfully brings the three-hour opera together and gives a wonderful performance of Tchaikovsky's sweet melody, bringing out the beautiful and serene sound of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
