Born on May 17, 1918, on a farm in southern Sweden, Birgit Nilsson would have celebrated her 100th birthday in 2018. In 1946, she was offered an understudy role at the Royal Swedish Opera and made her debut as Agathe in *Der Freischütz* under the baton of Fritz Busch. Furthermore, in 1951, on Busch’s recommendation, she appeared at Glyndebourne, where she gained worldwide fame for her performance as Elettra in *Idomeneo*. After making her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1954, she was invited back every year thereafter, establishing herself as a Wagnerian singer of her generation. Filmed in part at the farm in her hometown (Boastad), where she was born, raised, and spent her later years, this documentary is a fascinating piece that centers on rare rehearsal footage, interviews, and stage recordings, while also incorporating recent interviews with key figures in the opera world who knew her. The director is Thomas Voigt, a music journalist and author of numerous works. Featured in the film are Plácido Domingo, the first recipient of the “Birgit Nilsson Prize”—a music award named in her honor; Jonas Kaufmann, a tenor who is both popular and highly accomplished and represents the best of his generation; opera director Otto Schenk; Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Richard Wagner’s great-granddaughter; Valery Solti, widow of the great conductor Solti; Sir John Turley, former General Manager of the Royal Opera House; and Joseph Volpi, former General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera—the testimonies of this distinguished group of interviewees are not to be missed.
