Prokofiev's crazy erotic world explodes in a psychiatric ward! The Angel of Fire" is the third opera Prokofiev completed, composed between 1919 and 1927. It was composed in the same radical early style as his Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 3. Set in 16th-century Germany in the Rhine region, the opera tells the story of Renata, the mysterious protagonist who falls lustfully in love with a delusional "angel of fire" whom she has befriended since childhood, and is haunted by nightmares. Ruprecht, a knight who adores her, tries in vain to save her, and she is placed in a convent. Her arrival creates a bad atmosphere, and she is put on trial for exorcism, but the real devil is summoned, and Renata is sentenced to be burned. Director Andrea Brate sees the surrealistic story as realistic schizophrenia and moves the setting from a convent to a modern psychiatric ward. The atmosphere is somber, but the music is bursting with Prokofievian verses. Dissonance, unusual rhythms, and deafening acoustics are indicative of avant-garde art.Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundite, born in 1976, gives an insane performance, and Bo Skoufus, who accompanies her, changes the concept of opera in a prisoner-like way.
