The Italian tenor Salvatore Riccitra, who died in a car accident in September 2011 at the age of 43, plays the role of Don Alvaro. Licitra also made his debut as Don Alvaro at La Scala on March 2, 1999. This role earned Licitra Muti's approval, and in his early thirties he became La Scala's signature tenor. The following September, 2000, he sang the role at La Scala in Japan, and it was a role in which Licitra excelled. In this video, you can see Licitra's Alvaro, which is very rare nowadays. Don Carlo was sung by Carlos Alvarez, a famous Spanish baritone. Leonora is played by Swedish prima donna Nina Stemme. The Abbess is Alastair Miles, a graceful English bass. The cast is of an extremely high standard, with Nadia Krasteva, a mezzo-soprano of Bulgarian origin who is very active in German-speaking countries, especially at the Vienna State Opera, as Preziosilla. Mehta, who specializes in Verdi's operas, especially \"La Forza del Destino,\" has done an excellent job in this lengthy work. David Pountney's direction is characterized by the use of a simple stage to create a highly concentrated stage for the serious passages, while the funny scenes in which Preziosilla and Melitone are active are made to look like musical entertainment, emphasizing the contrast between light and dark elements in the work.
