First performed at La Scala, Milan in 1845, \"Giovanna d'Arco\" was Verdi's seventh opera, written at the age of thirty-one and based on Schiller's play \"The Maid of Orleans\". It tells the story of Joan of Arc, the young woman who led the French army to victory in the Hundred Years' War and lost her life in the end. The libretto was poorly received at the time, and the work languished until its revival in 1951. The venue is the Teatro Farnese, famous for its unusually wide stage. One of the oldest theatres in Europe, it is built of wood and was created for a Medici princess who married into the Farnese family. Destroyed by bombing in the Second World War, it was restored in 1956 and 1960, and since Claudio Abbado's performance of Verdi's Requiem there in 2011 it has hosted a production during the festival every year. The staging is by Peter Greenaway, Britain's leading maverick of art cinema, known for \"The Cook, the Thief, His Wife \u0026amp; Her Lover\" and \"Nightwatching\". Here too he makes the auditorium part of the stage, projecting images of the Virgin, modern-style manga and refugee children, and using fantastical lighting to create an installation that exploits the proscenium frame to the full. The title role is taken by the dynamic soprano Vittoria Yeo, born in Korea in 1980, who works chiefly in the Italian opera houses and made her Salzburg Festival debut under Muti.
