This video is from his 2016 solo recital at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The first half of the program features virginal music composers William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, and John Bull. The second half featured J.S. Bach's \"Goltberg Variations,\" English virginal music of the first half of the 16th century that greatly influenced later Baroque music.The technical and melancholic variation forms of the great master Byrd were influenced by Sweelinck, who was exiled from England to Holland, and were passed on from Sweelinck to the North German organ school and then to Bach. The Bard's representative virginal work, \"Hugh Ashton's Grand,\" is based on the 16th-century English variation form of the grand, and is a masterpiece of the late Renaissance and Baroque music. The Dutch composer and organist Sverink, active from the end of the Renaissance to the early Baroque period, has composed \"My Youth is Gone,\" a work with a theme and six variations based on a German folk song. And Bull's Variations based on a folk song from Walsingham, a pilgrimage site in Norfolk, eastern England. The music successfully expresses the contradictory musicality of brightness and melancholy that is characteristic of virginal music. Then there is J.S. Bach's \"Goltberg Variations,\" which he has been playing since his childhood.
