This is live footage of the historic opening concert. Built on redeveloped land in the old industrial docklands of Hamburg, the port city at the mouth of the Elbe, the hall was designed by the Swiss architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron, whose previous work includes the stadium for the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and the Prada boutique in Aoyama. The acoustics were entrusted to Yasuhisa Toyota, one of the world's foremost acousticians, and the piano was chosen by Mitsuko Uchida. The NDR Symphony Orchestra took the hall as its new home and changed its name to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, while the smaller hall became the base of Ensemble Resonanz.
Alongside the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and its chief conductor Thomas Hengelbrock, the concert featured a number of leading musicians. The countertenor Philippe Jaroussky sang Caccini's "Amarilli mia bella" and other pieces with the harpist Margret Köll. The programme also included the world premiere of "Reminiszenz - Triptychon und Spruch in memoriam Hans Henny Jahnn", written by Wolfgang Rihm for the occasion; Jahnn was a writer and organ builder with strong local associations. The concert closes with the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, brought to a radiant conclusion by a distinguished quartet of soloists: Hanna-Elisabeth Müller (soprano), Wiebke Lehmkuhl (alto), Pavol Breslik (tenor) and Bryn Terfel (bass-baritone). The exterior of the building was lit with projection mapping.
Also included is a 53-minute documentary, "A New Landmark: the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg". Drawing on interviews with those involved, it is a valuable record of the ten years from the start of construction in 2007 - a project whose three-year building schedule stretched to ten and whose final cost came to ten times the original budget.
King International
