This project has been ongoing since Thielemann assumed the position of principal conductor in 2012, and with the release of Symphony No. 2, the complete set from No. 1 to No. 9 is now available. Although Bruckner’s Symphony No. 2 is performed less frequently than the highly popular Symphony No. 3 or his later symphonies, it is a work of great charm, marked by its lyricism, beauty, and depth. Like Bruckner’s other symphonies, several editions of this work exist. For this recording, Thielemann uses the edition prepared by William Carragan, an authority on the editing of Bruckner’s scores. Bruckner completed a symphony in D minor in 1869—intended to be his Symphony No. 2, three years after composing his first symphony—but sealed it away without assigning it a number. This work is now known as “No. 0.” He composed the Second Symphony again in 1872. Five years after the first draft, in 1877, he undertook a major revision (the second draft). This recording features the second draft, edited by Carragan. While this cycle has been recorded at various venues, this particular performance takes place at the much-discussed Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
