To see an opera on this scale in a medium-sized theatre of around a thousand seats is a real luxury.\n\nDon Carlo was originally staged at the Paris Opéra in five acts, but the version usually heard today is the four-act revision Verdi made for La Scala in 1884. In 1886 Verdi produced a revised five-act version that restored the first act to the four-act score, and because it was used for a performance in Modena at the end of 1886 it has come to be known as the \"Modena version\". This performance was given at the same Modena theatre some 126 years later.\n\nThe biggest name is Giacomo Prestia as Filippo. Born in Florence in 1960, he is a Verdi bass of great popularity in Italy, and his restrained acting gives the production real backbone. Carlo is sung by Mario Malagnini, a tenor born in Salò on Lake Garda; he made his debut in 1984 and won praise as Radames opposite Dimitra Theodossiou on the Prague State Opera's Japanese tour of Aida in October 2009. Elisabetta is Cellia Costea, an established Romanian soprano born in Piatra Neamț. Simone Piazzola's Rodrigo is especially noteworthy - born in Verona in 1985, he sounds far more accomplished than his 27 years at the time of recording would suggest. Princess Eboli is Alla Pozniak, principal mezzo-soprano of the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv since 2004; she has appeared in Japan (billed as Alla Poznyak) to great acclaim as Amneris in Aida in November 2006 and, in October 2010, as both Amneris and Marina in Boris Godunov. The Grand Inquisitor is Luciano Montanaro, a bass much in demand in recent years.
