Giovanna d’Arco refers, as you may know, to Joan of Arc, who liberated Orléans. Although the opera enjoyed a fair amount of popularity for a while after its premiere, today it is rarely performed—ranking near the bottom among all of Verdi’s operas. However, its lack of popularity is largely due to the libretto by Temistocle Solera (the librettist of *Nabucco*); musically, the work reflects Verdi’s artistic maturation as he transitioned from his early to his middle period.\nThe video featured here is from a performance at the Verdi Festival in Parma in October 2008. The title role is sung by Bulgarian-born soprano Svetla Vasileva. Some of you may remember her from the 2001 May Festival in Florence, when she shared the role of Violetta with Grubelova in a performance of *La Traviata* that toured Japan. With a voice that resonates with strength and brilliance, and a mastery of the light-hearted music, Vasileva is the perfect fit for Giovanna. Giovanna’s father, Giacomo, is played by the highly experienced Renato Bruson. Needless to say, he displays a commanding presence worthy of the phrase “a single note is worth a thousand ryō.” Evan Bowlers, who plays King Charles VII of France, was born in New York City. Having spent many years performing at the opera houses in Nuremberg and Leipzig, Germany—and being virtually unknown in Italy—his appearance in this production of *Giovanna d’Arco* in Parma generated quite a buzz as the debut of a hidden talent. With a rich, full-bodied voice that combines sweetness and freshness, he is sure to become an increasingly prominent Verdi tenor in the years to come. The conductor is Bruno Bartoletti, the dean of the Italian opera world. Born in 1926, he was 82 years old at the time. He delivers a performance that is Verdi through and through.\nThe production was directed by Gabriele Lavagna, a master director well-known in Japan.
