Carlo Guelfi, who plays Don Carlo, is a baritone from Rome. He specializes in roles from Verdi through Verismo opera, particularly villains. Giacomo Prestia, who plays Silva, is a bass born in Florence in 1960. In a field where bass roles are often dominated by Eastern European singers, he is a rare talent carrying on the tradition of Italian basses. Conductor Antonello Allemandi is a veteran of Italian opera whose performances you can always count on. Pieralli’s staging makes effective use of a slanted backdrop while maintaining a clear and accessible overall presentation.\n“Ernani” is a work that, despite being relatively frequently staged, has few video recordings available, and this is the first-ever Blu-ray Disc release.
