Premiered at La Scala on 17 November 1839, it enjoyed considerable success for the work of a complete newcomer. Oberto, Count of San Bonifacio, has been defeated in battle and forced to flee; his daughter Leonora, left behind in Verona, has fallen in love with and become engaged to Riccardo, a count on the enemy side who concealed his identity. Riccardo abandons her to marry Cuniza, sister of a powerful man among Oberto's enemies. The furious Leonora sets off alone for Bassano, where the wedding is to take place. Oberto, learning of his daughter's disgrace, also comes to the town and demands revenge, but is killed in a duel with Riccardo; on hearing the news, Leonora loses her reason. First opera though it is, Verdi was already in his mid-twenties, and there is much here that foreshadows the composer to come. This video records a performance given in Parma at the Verdi Festival in October 2007. Leonora is sung by Francesca Sassu, a soprano born in Sassari, Sardinia, in 1984, who won praise singing Leonora on the second night of the Japanese premiere of Oberto given by the Tokyo Chamber Opera Theatre in October 2005. Shortly before that she had won the competition of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto, and Oberto was the production awarded to her as the prize, so that Leonora marked her operatic debut. Two years on, we hear a more mature Sassu here. Oberto is Giovanni Battista Parodi, born in Genoa in 1976, an Italian bass and graduate of the La Scala Accademia who sang the title role of Attila at the 2010 Verdi Festival. Mariana Pentcheva as Cuniza and Fabio Sartori as Riccardo are both singers at the height of their powers.
