Mandrika is played by Thomas Hampson, a superstar baritone whose voice has reached new heights of sophistication and depth. What a star-studded cast! To top it off, the roles of Count Waldemar and Adelaide were cast with the luxury of featuring Wagnerian baritone Albert Domen and the legendary Czech prima donna Gabriela Benyáciková, who once took the world by storm. Furthermore, the key role of Zdenka is played by Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, a young soprano who has rapidly risen to prominence in recent years. Born in Mannheim in 1985, Müller joined the Bavarian State Opera in 2010 and has since become a popular singer, performing every kind of role from supporting parts to leading roles. Even on a stage filled with veterans, Müller’s lively singing and acting are thrilling the audience. Christian Thielemann, chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden, conducts the orchestra and chorus of the Dresden State Opera—the venue where *Arabella* premiered. When Thielemann conducts, the Dresden orchestra truly produces the traditional German sound, creating a rich, distinctive flavor that sets it apart from Strauss performances elsewhere. Thielemann also serves as the Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival.\nFlorentine Krepper’s staging makes full use of the Festspielhaus’s wide stage by placing the main stage and a secondary stage side by side. Aside from this, the set design is unpretentious and traditional, with a sense of calm that complements Thielemann’s music perfectly.
