For the first time in three years since 2008, maestro Boulez took the podium for two nights (this recording is from the first night, July 28). As 2011 marked the Mahler anniversary, the cantata “Song of Sorrow” was featured as the main program, alongside Berg’s “Lulu Suite” and the “Concert Aria ‘Wine’”—works that have long been central to Boulez’s conducting career.\n[Song of Sorrow]\n“Song of Sorrow” for soloist, mixed chorus, and orchestra is a cantata composed by Mahler—a graduate of the Vienna Musikverein Conservatory—to enter the “Beethoven Prize,” a composition competition open to its graduates. The history of revisions this work—which is also regarded as Mahler’s debut—underwent after its “rejection” is somewhat convoluted.\nSpecifically, the first draft, written between 1878 and 1880, was originally structured in three parts: “Fairy Tale of the Forest,” “The Minstrel,” and “The Wedding,” but revisions were made intermittently from around 1888, and the final revised version from 1898–99 settled on a two-part structure with Part 1, “A Forest Fairy Tale,” omitted.\nThis live performance, in which Boulez conducted the Vienna Philharmonic, is based on that revised version. Since Boulez had previously recorded the revised version of “Song of Sorrow” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Walthamstow Town Hall in 1969, this marks a re-recording 42 years later. Incidentally, Boulez had recorded Part 1, “Fairy Tale in the Forest,” in a studio session with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Watford Town Hall in 1970; this was also the world premiere recording of “Fairy Tale in the Forest.”\nBoulez had already completed a recording of Mahler’s complete symphonies; among these, he recorded Symphony No. 6 with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1994, Symphony No. 5 in 1996, “Das Lied von der Erde” in 1999, No. 3 in 2001, and No. 2 in 2005—the most of any series—demonstrating their excellent chemistry.
