He also sang the role during La Scala’s tour of Japan the following September, in 2000, and it was one of Riccitella’s absolute signature roles. This recording offers a now-rare opportunity to see Riccitella as Don Alvaro. Opposite him as Don Carlo was Carlos Álvarez, Spain’s renowned baritone. Leonora was portrayed by Swedish prima donna Nina Stenme. The Abbot was played by the elegant British bass Alastair Miles. The cast is of an exceptionally high caliber, featuring Nadia Krasteva—a Bulgarian mezzo-soprano who has enjoyed great success in German-speaking countries, primarily at the Vienna State Opera—as Preziosilla.
