Perhaps because its realistic narrative resonates with the current climate, the opera has been staged frequently outside of Russia in recent years. This release features a new production staged at the Berlin State Opera in 2008. Conducted by Music Director Barenboim, the performance is rich and compelling, with a cast that skillfully blends young, mid-career, and veteran singers. The production is directed by Chernyakov, whose 2009 tour of Tchaikovsky’s *Eugene Onegin* with the Bolshoi Theatre in Japan garnered tremendous acclaim.
