Isach Savage is an American tenor with a voice of rare balance of delicacy and power, who came to international attention after winning the 2014 Wagner International Competition in Seattle. The bass-baritone is Ryan McKinney, an American who also appeared in Bayreuth and whose deep reading of the characters and lyrics evokes empathy for the characters and lyrics. Cover art is an abstract painting by Mo Willems, also a picture book artist.Willems was so moved by a Beethoven concert one evening that he spent a year listening to and studying each piece over and over, realizing how Beethoven's style and technique had changed over time. Based on this experience, he created nine panels, each representing a movement. Each panel is composed of parts that represent each movement, and the parts represent the length of the movement. Looking at Willems' panels, you feel as if you are looking inside Beethoven's head through Willems' and Noseda's performances.
