It was originally established in 1783 by decree of Empress Catherine II, and the current theater was completed in 1859. The following year, in 1860, it was named the “Mariinsky Imperial Theater” in honor of Maria Alexandrovna, the empress consort of Emperor Alexander II at the time; however, it is also known for having changed its name numerous times in line with the city’s name changes. (During the Stalin era, it was called the “Kirov Theater” in memory of the death of Communist Party leader Sergei Kirov.) At this historic theater, Tchaikovsky’s famous ballets such as *The Nutcracker*, *Sleeping Beauty*, and *Swan Lake*, as well as renowned Russian operas like Glinka’s *A Life for the Tsar* and Borodin’s *Prince Igor*, have premiered one after another at this historic theater. Although it is such a historic theater, a new theater building was completed on an adjacent lot in 2013, and this video captures the opening performance held there. This elegant theater, known as “Mariinsky II,” took its first step toward a new chapter in its history on this commemorative night, graced by the finest singers of our time—including Netrebko and Domingo—along with magnificent dancers who carry on the Russian tradition. And Valery Gergiev. Now, let us be swept away into a night of enchantment.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Arthaus Musik","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595506376993,"sku":"807280221398","price":5690.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/807280221398.jpg?v=1790481402","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/807280221398","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
