At the time Rossini composed the opera, Paisiello’s work of the same name was very popular; consequently, it is said that Rossini had to (at least nominally) pay respect to his predecessor’s work—such as by changing the title to *Almaviva, or The Useless Precaution* for the premiere—while also highlighting the originality of his own composition. Although it did not gain much popularity immediately after its premiere, it has since become one of the most popular operas of all time, rivaling the very best. With its masterful characterization, music bursting with vitality, technically demanding arias, and scattered witticisms… this is the true portrayal of human nature.
