Of course, the wicked witch was punished, and the siblings returned to their parents.\n“Hansel and Gretel” is a story from the Grimm’s Fairy Tales that everyone knows. There are probably many older children who still dream of a gingerbread house. Although it is an opera for children, it was composed by Humperdinck (1854–1921), a student of Wagner. The music is more profound than one might imagine, and as the famous prelude makes clear, it offers a truly rich listening experience. Since it ends with a happy ending, it is traditionally performed at Christmas in Europe; however, this production is quite rich in satire and symbolism, featuring wartime footage interspersed throughout. Furthermore, there is no doubt that deep meaning is hidden in the fact that the father and the witch are played by the same actor.
